It can be fun.
Making skin care products at home can be enjoyable. You can pick and choose your ingredients and you really know what you’re putting on your face no questions asked.
Not everything can be accomplished this way, of course, but, if you’ve never whipped up a facial mask yourself you may be surprised at how beneficial one can be.
Here’s a recipe that uses one of my go-to ingredients – honey. What’s blue about it? Blueberries!
Get Ready For Your Facial Mask
Prepare your Blue Honey Facial (see instructions below) cover the bowl and refrigerate.
Cleanse your face, neck and décolleté with a mild cleanser. Rinse thoroughly.
Use a facial scrub that’s formulated for your skin type or you can easily make one yourself by combining a handful of granulated brown sugar with a handful of your usual cleanser. As an alternative you can also combine the brown sugar with witch hazel for oily skin or jojoba oil for dry skin.
Work in your facial scrub using gentle circular motions. Concentrate on any blackhead prone areas. Again rinse thoroughly.
Soak a small towel in comfortably hot water and apply to your face, neck and decollete, patting it over the surface of the skin continually until the towel cools.
Now how to mix and apply your facial mask…
10 Tablespoons fresh organically grown blueberries – you can use frozen as well. Organically grown is important though.
4 Tablespoons oatmeal – ground to a fine texture. You can use the blender if that’s most convenient.
3 to 4 Tablespoons honey – locally produced is always best.
Blend the entire mixture until it is creamy and smooth. Note that if it’s too thick or sticky, you can add witch hazel or yogurt to help it be easier to use.
Apply the mask forehead to décolleté with your fingers or a large cosmetic spatula, and let it absorb into your skin for at least 20 minutes. Rinse the mask with warm water and pat your face dry with a soft towel.
Finishing Your Home Facial Treatment
Make sure you’ve rinsed off all traces of your facial mixture. I’ve found that the best way to do this at home is to get into the shower.
Apply witch hazel to your skin liberally. Allow it to dry.
Work in a facial serum that’s appropriate for your skin type followed by your moisturizer of choice. Drum your fingers around your eyes and tap the rest of your skin after application. Once again, apply all skin care products forehead to décolleté. And don’t forget sunscreen rain or shine.
Mark your calendar to set up regular days to do your home facial. Once per week is always best.
